39 Weeks Bump Update

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in BUMP UPDATES, My Pregnancy, PREGNANCY

Before I go into the 39 week update, I’d like to tell you about this dress. It’s a convertible dress from 2chix Maternity that I just received and decided to wear to my OB appointment. I KID YOU NOT, every single person that crossed our path that day commented on it. Seriously! I had people look into our exam room while we were waiting asking me where I got the dress. And that’s considering I look like a whale at this point in my 39 weeks (I’m a tall girl + pregnancy weight = makes me look pretty big in general).
Personally I wore the dress because it’s insanely comfortable- the fabric is very soft, light and  very flowy. I am in love with the color!  But I didn’t expect it too cause such a reaction from passerbys and the office staff at the doctor’s office. And it’s a convertible dress, meaning you can wear it many different ways (as a halter, criss cross, off the shoulder, one shoulder, tube dress, one shoulder, cap sleeve, etc) – I wore it criss-cross and then later in the day created a little off the shoulder look like in the picture. I don’t think it’s specifically a maternity dress but it definitely fits well in maternity even at my 39 weeks. You can buy it here in coral, blue and black and it can even be worn as a skirt. I know I’ll be digging it post-partum when I get my body back, so you’ll be seeing me in this dress much more.

STATS:

Her size: WATERMELON

How far along: 39 WEEKS!!!! It just doesn’t get old. I never thought I’d be that far along- it’s pretty cool.

Total weight gain: I’m at 175 lb. (+1 lbs this week, total at 39 lbs). It looks like I’ll hit the round 40 lbs of weight gain, which still blows my mind. I am curious and excited to see how it comes off though.

Sleep: Sleep is good, it’s just hard to get up 3-4 times a night, surrounded by massive pillows and dragging your huge belly over the edge of the bed. Luckily I can still do it without outside help :)

Maternity Clothes: Dresses, yoga pants and fitted tshirts is what I’m most comfy in.

Food cravings: SWEETS :))))))

Food aversions: Anything that I have been eating for a long time. I like change.

Symptoms I HAVE:
Heartburn that goes from mild to strong depending on what I eat
Low pelvic shocks from Alexis’s head once in a while
Occasional unreasonable irritability (twice so far the whole pregnancy, both this week)
And a new one these past two days: Bruised upper inner thighs ( from her head, I assume)

But otherwise, I am really comfortable and feel great!

Stretchmarks: I completely forgot about this  question, until reader “Lola” reminded me about it. I guess because there hasn’t been any change for so many weeks, I stopped updating it. So…. I still have no stretchmarks. The area around my belly button looks VERY stretched and very thin and I can see capillaries, but no actual stretchmarks yet. Almost every evening I keep finding a reddish spot and pointing it to hubby who assures me it doesn’t look like a stretchmark and he is always right, because the spot goes away the next day.  And I continue to be very diligent about moisturizing my belly with Mama Mio Tummy Oil and drinking lots of water . I have one week left and while it doesn’t look like I’m going to get any stretchies, anything is possible before and after birth.

Doctor’s Appointment: Everything looked great as usual. This time the doc couldn’t really feel her head, so he wanted to make sure she’s still head down. We got sent to an ultrasound. I was hoping to see her face one more time but she was just too low. She is head down and is measuring 7lbs 8 oz at the moment, though I know these measurements are usually pretty inaccurate. My AFI (amniotic fluid index) is perfect at 11.8, which is something I was concerned about knowing that it diminishes towards the end of pregnancy. And we finally got to verify that she is in fact a SHE! Andrew received a print out of her head and I got her circled labia lol

Movement: She has her active times during 7-10pm hours and morning hours. She sleeps really well at night. I wonder if that’s going to transfer into real world at all. I did read that there are some theories about that.

Belly Button: Outie

Gender: GIRL!

Best moment of the week:
Just being this far along and knowing Alexis is going to be here soon.
It was pretty nice to finish the nursery ( almost finish… I don’t think it’ll ever be 100% finished, since I am planning on continuously adding things)
Hanging out with my girls sans babies during a movie night that was more of a “let’s talk about penises and sex” night rather  than the actual “watching a movie” night.

What I’m looking forward to:

I am EXTREMELY curious to see how my labor starts! Am I going to be in early labor for many hours or will it hit me like a truck? And of course the question is WHEN WHEN WHEN!
I am not impatient to get Alexis out, aside from wanting to meet her and keep her safe, but I am very interested to see how the labor goes for me.

What I miss:

It’s 39 weeks, so that means I got the go-ahead from hubby to finally walk and be active and work as hard as I want ( he wanted me to take it easy before then). I’m enjoying this newfound sense of independence :) I can finally see a glimpse of my normal life on the horizon and cannot wait for Alexis to come and change its definition. I can’t miss anything right now, because it’s not too long until I get to do it all again.

So another week of possible start of labor. Everyone is taking guesses and I am the only one who doesn’t have a clue!

I am planning a few posts for the next week, unless I go into labor. Here’s what I have in the works:

  • Hospital Bags (what we packed)
  •  Organic Baby clothes and where to buy them
  • Our Birth Plan
  • A random happenings/picture post

Again: In case I go into labor, I will try to have Andrew do a quick post to tell you all that it’s show time. I will most definitely post something on my Facebook page and that’s also probably how I am going to be updating you all in the first day or so. So if I disappear with no posts, it’s most likely NOT due to labor.

38 Weeks Bump Update

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in BUMP UPDATES, My Pregnancy, PREGNANCY

STATS:

Her size: BIG GIRL READY TO COME OUT

How far along: 38 WEEKS!!!! Wow 38 weeks just seems so much more substantial than 37 weeks for some reason!

Total weight gain: I’m at 174 lb. (+3 lbs this week, total at 38 lbs).  Seriously? I mean what the hell! I don’t understand my weight gain whatsoever. The only thing that saves me from being pissed at it is that I don’t look like I’m gaining that much weight..and the fact that I am almost done…and the fact that weight loss has always been easy for me, since I know exactly what my body needs. But still seeing these numbers on the scale and not having a clue where it’s coming from, considering I eat really really healthy (+ a few small treats a day) is a little confusing.

Sleep: My sides really hurt, but otherwise it’s pretty solid sleep even with bathroom break interruptions.

Maternity Clothes: Dresses, yoga pants and fitted tshirts is what I’m most comfy in.

Food cravings: None really at this point.

Food aversions: cooked tomatoes- they give me wicked heartburn

Symptoms I HAVE: This morning I woke up and for the first time during pregnancy looked down to see somewhat swollen feet. Whoa! They weren’t majorly swollen (when you press on them there’s no indentation), but it sort of concerned me. I measured my BP and it was fine, called the nurse to just run it past her since it’s a pretty sudden symptom and she said that as long as my BP is good, it’s nothing to worry about, most women get swelling early in their third trimester.

Heartburn- YUCK! This sucker picked up this week! A few times, I even had to take half a Tums and drink by-carb ( I only take it when it’s really really bad).

Otherwise, I feel great! No back pain, no pains in general- really expected to be more miserable towards the end.

Doctor’s Appointment: Everything was fine as usual. I brought my birth plan (which I will post soon) and had my OB look it over  and sign it. He said that the only two things that he foresees us having a problem withwhen it comes to the L&D nurses was the “no IV” and “no continuous monitoring”.  Again, he reiterated calling his cell if there’s a problem and also telling the nurses to call him in when I’m dilated to 10 cm rather than wait till she’s crowned, which is when they usually call him in  (because of my family history of fast labors and pushing and because of my body build).

Also I could see a marked changed in his attitude towards me going for un-medicated birth and using hypnosis for relaxation. He started our relationship with the “why take the pain if you can have an epidural” attitude, which is where I was at that point as well. When I first told him about my plan for hypnobabies, he smiled and I felt like he was letting me do what I wanted but was pretty skeptical of whether it would work or if I’d pull through. This appointment, hubby and I both got an impression that he was actually routing for me to go without an epidural. A few times he said: “You can definitely do it!”  and “You won’t need an epidural” and seemed genuinely excited! I’m really glad for his support!

Movement: This girl loves to move! It’s especially fun when her  head presses on my nerve in my crotch! lol

Belly Button: Outie

Gender: GIRL! Though…… we never got it confirmed. We had our 20 week anatomy scan when we were told a girl, and the only other u/s we had, she kept her legs tightly closed. So we hope we’re not going to be “surprised” in the delivery room!

Best moment of the week: I have two this week! My mom has finally arrived and it’s so awesome! I feel all is now well in the world and Alexis can come whenever she’d like. My mom is amazing help, but also a huge distraction because all I want to do now and hang out with her :) She’s so funny with Alexis and my stomach, so gentle and curious and cute! I guess they never thought of the baby as a real baby back then, they didn’t know anything about what’s going on inside. So this whole “it’s a real baby inside you” thing is new to her. She sees her a her granddaughter even though she’s not here yet.

Another awesome moment this week was a surprise mini-shower from my friends, Michelle and Christine. I totally didn’t expect it, and was completely oblivious to the clues (read my attitude towards traditional baby showers post)!  They did such a  good job, though- I had no suspicions and was completely caught of guard and we had such a nice time ( and no cheesy shower games haha). I was coming over Michelle’s to hang out with her while my hubby was flying to NYC, in case I’d get in labor and I literally almost put sweats and a tee on to go over there and at the last second she insisted we take “last bump” photos together, so I was forced to at least put on a dress. hahaha I still laugh at how oblivious I was of all the clues that were out there.

I love you, girls! I’m so lucky I have you here close by!

That really makes me want to do a baby party when Alexis comes! Hope I can pull it off!

What I’m looking forward to:

I am really excited about experiencing childbirth and seeing Alexis for the first time and just understanding  what this whole “being a parent” thing is all about.

What I miss:

Not being helpless. My husband is even more protective of me and Alexis now that she’s almost here, so he won’t let me do anything. He wants her to cook till 39 weeks, because the doc said that’s where most of the time they’re truly done developing, so I am not even “allowed” to go for a walk or clean or move around much in case it’ll kick start labor. I’m personally fine with her coming this week, but I do understand what he’s saying so I just smile and do what he says, realizing that in 1 week things will change and it’ll be mostly me having sleepless nights and breastfeeding on cue with as much help from him as possible.

So I almost feel like it’s possible this is my last update! :)

In case I go into labor, I will try to have Andrew do a quick post to tell you all that it’s show time. I will most definitely post something on my Facebook page and that’s also probably how I am going to be updating you all in the first day or so. So if I disappear with no posts, it’s most likely NOT due to labor.

37 WEEK BUMP UPDATE – FULL TERM

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in BUMP UPDATES, My Pregnancy

STATS:

Her size: THE HIGHLYANTICIPATED WATERMELON.

How far along: 37 WEEKS!!!! FULL TERM!

Total weight gain: I’m at 171 lb. (+2 lbs this week, total at 35 lbs). My husband laughs at me, because at some point he was 178 lbs which is not far from my weight now! I laugh WITH him, because I know how much easier it is for me to lose weight than him 😛 So he might tease me (good-heartedly) now when he tries to help me get up, but I know I’ll be taunting him when the pounds just come off without much effort and he’s still trying to lose “the pregnancy weight” he gained.

Sleep: Oh my sides just hurt! I don’t like the idea of sleeping on my right side because vena cava is located more to the right and if I accidentally flip half way on my back in the middle of the night, the weight of the baby might block the blood flow. I read in a few places that pregnant women who sleep more on the right have a statistically double the chance of stillbirth. The link is weak, but it’s enough to make me flip over to my left every time I find myself sleeping on the right side. But man, I have to say, a few times a night I just HAVE to do it, because the left side feels bruised.

Maternity Clothes: Just the same old stuff I’ve blogged about before. I am obsessed with Boob Design and am patiently waiting for their US website launch this month, as well as the release of their spring collection. Don’t forget to enter the giveaway– 3 more days left!

Food cravings: Chocolate cake (considering I’m not a fan of anything chocolate)

Food aversions: I have finally conquered my aversion for beans, left over from the 1st trimester nausea. And I’m glad I did, because as of last week I stopped eating diary products to clear myself of milk proteins for breastfeeding and I need to get my protein somewhere. (Diary is the biggest allergen and can make the baby colicky, gassy, aside from many other things that I won’t get into. If you’re interested, I’d pick up a book called The Baby Bond: The New Science Behind What’s Really Important When Caring for Your Baby. The book does like to go on about things, but if you can sit through that, there is a TON of information, all backed up by studies, that is not to be missed: from breastfeeding to allergic reactions, to baby wearing and so on.)

Symptoms I HAVE: Nada! I mean, yeah, there are a few minor ones I’ve learned to live with: minor heartburn, minor fatigue, minor pelvic pain when Alexis decides to play. But overall, I am feeling better than I ever thought I would at this point. That fact makes hubby think that Alexis will come AFTER her due date. “You don’t look or feel like you’re about to pop!”- he says. I tend to agree, but of course anything out of the ordinary sends me into “Is this it? Why am I feeling so nauseous?” haha
My BH aren’t very frequent at this point, my boobs stopped leaking- so I might be far far away from actual labor :)

Doctor’s Appointment: I have my doc’s appointments every Thursday on my weekly anniversary. It was all good as usual. My OB seems very supportive of my Hypnobirth plan. We discussed the fact that my mom AND my sister both had fast labors (6 hours and 4 hours respectively with only 15 min pushing), so it’s possible I’ll go the same way. He also gave me his cell phone number to call in case there’s anyone who is giving us any hassle about following the birth plan in a non-emergency situation. I did opt out of cervical checks – he didn’t say a thing. So I’m very happy with my OB and super excited about birth.

Oh and Alexis disengaged! Boo! She’s about at -3 station (considering she was engaged my last appointment). It’s good because there’s noone to headbutt my cervix for the time being but bad because I’d like to know she’s getting closer to labor.

Movement: Evenings are her time! I love the movement! Even when she is hurting me, I still love feeling her move. It definitely beats worrying about why she isn’t moving. Now that Andrew can hear her heartbeat from the outside, I often ask him to listen when there is a stretch of a few hours without much movement. It’s so nice to have that reassurance. I hated the time before movements were felt. The only thing that saved us was the Doppler (which was the best purchase ever).

Belly Button: Total outie! I think it’s kinda cute!

Gender: GIRL!

Best moment of the week: I couldn’t remember so I asked hubby and his answer was “Hanging out with my baby!” :) Aw!

What I’m looking forward to:

Only 5 short days till my mom’s arrival. I’m already dreaming of all the awesome meals she’ll cook!!!!

What I miss:

SMOKED SALMON and normal people clothes! I have recently allowed myself to look through catalogues and websites for clothes because I feel I am close enough to wearing normal non-maternity stuff. I’m going to dance like a crazy girl when I fit into my NYC size skinny jeans (those are really really small), but before I do, I want to get some colorful skinny jeans in coral and yellow to wear in the meantime. YUM!

So I am officially full term and it feels good. I’ll slowly start natural labor induction after 38th week when my mom is here and everything is ready to go. What I mean by that is simply walking. I’ve been having strong BHs when I walk so I’ve stayed away from it. Once I’m done with week 38, I can resume walking again and not worry about contractions.
We are sort of ready for her to come. The seat has been installed, we took our car for service to make sure it’s in tip-top shape, birth plan is made and printed, hospital bag list is ready, hubby is trained, a few more things this weekend and Alexis officially has the go-ahead from us. The room is not fully finished yet, but she’ll be sleeping in a co-sleeper for the first 6 months anyways, so I’m not worried. This weekend we’ll do as much as possible, including pack the hospital bags, clean the room, wash her clothes and diapers, and organize everything. But mentally I am ready and excited! I cannot wait for this new chapter of our life to start- I’m definitely ready to be done with the last one!

HAPPY FULL TERM, ALEXIS!

35 WEEK BUMP UPDATE {35/35}

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in BUMP UPDATES, My Pregnancy

STATS:

Her size: We’re a large cantaloupe this week! Getting closer and closer to a watermelon.

How far along: 35 WEEKS. Yesterday was the famous 35/35 – 35 weeks along with 35 days to go.

Total weight gain: 168 lb.  (+2 lbs this week, total at 32 lbs).  I guess I gotta get used to this 2 lbs a week thing. I can tell Alexis is gaining a lot, she’s getting bigger and stronger with each day. Starting from about 28 weeks, I’ve been trying to make sure my protein intake is adequate, which isn’t exactly easy for a person who doesn’t eat meat, so all I have to rely on is diary products, cheese and occasional well cooked shrimp or sardines (low in mercury and dioxins). I’ve had sort of an aversion to beans this whole pregnancy, so I can’t even eat them without grimacing. I’m pretty sure that’s where the extra weight gain is coming from, which makes me feel good because I know protein is something that is crucial for her development and her brain.

Sleep: The bathroom trips are out of control. Seriously, it feels like I get up 10 times a night (it’s really about 4-5 times). I can’t cut down on my evening water intake though, because I get so thirsty at night. Getting up 5 times a night doesn’t really bother me as much as I’d imagine it would, so I’m still pretty content with my sleep (minus the occasional nightmares)

Maternity Clothes: Just the same old stuff I’ve blogged about before

Food cravings: Anything sweet and fruit.

Food aversions: none

Symptoms I HAVE: Lots of little Lexi punches, occasional heartburn, occasional pelvic pressure. But otherwise I feel great! No stretchmarks so far either, so I have my fingers crossed (and tummy lubed up). BTW, I don’t think I ever mentioned but my skin cleared up. I had broken out pretty badly in the first trimester and it lasted throughout the 2nd trimester, but now it seems everything is settled in. I still don’t have the skin I had before pregnancy, but I attribute it to the fact that I am not using the same products, since they aren’t 100% “pregnancy approved”.

Doctor’s Appointment:  Yesterday for strep B test. Now I am switched over visiting the doctor’s office once a week.

Movement: The strong punches have started. I feel she’s trying to poke out of me with her butt! She is REALLY strong. It doesn’t necessarily hurt, but it’s not exactly pleasant. I do love her movements no matter how uncomfortable it gets. She seems to love my hipbone, because it gets kicked all the time.  I keep meaning to videotape her moving in my belly but miss her every time.

Belly Button: Outie.

Gender: GIRL!

Best moment of the week: I love feeling good. It’s surprising to me that I’m that far along and don’t have much to complain about in terms of aches. I do have occasional pains, but they don’t seem to bother me much. So I’m enjoying this part of the pregnancy.

What I’m looking forward to:

I should be looking forward to the holidays, but this year it’s going to be low key. We are having a nice Christmas dinner at our friends’ house, which is making me feel a little better about skipping most of the festivities ( we didn’t even decorate, because then we’d have to take all the decor down right as Lexi is supposed to arrive.

Another friend of ours is hosting an amazing New Year’s party this year at his mansion that we decided not to go to :(  But I swear that’s the last party we’ll have to miss (bummer :( ). We went back and forth considering going, but it’s just too close to our due date, too many people (flu season), and too much smoke.  Just to give you an idea of the scale of parties he throws: there’s gonna be valet parking at his house as well as a bus he rented that will take anyone home who doesn’t want to worry about not drinking and driving. There’s also going to be a separate area of the house set up for kids/teenagers with their own food and DJ, which I thought was a neat idea.

What I miss:

BEING ABLE TO BEND WITHOUT GROANING :) HA!

What else?

  •  I recently read something I’d like to share with you guys. If you aren’t subscribed to my Facebook page, you might have missed this. It was an article about pain fighting foods and one of those foods are cherries (or pretty much any berries), which was nice to know. But specifically, they found out that 2 tablespoons of cherry extract (cherry juice concentrate) is 10 times more effective at fighting inflammation than aspirin. If you read anything about inflammation in our bodies, you know that it has a lot of negative effects on our health and we all have it (from foods we eat and medications we take and just from living life), so it’s nice to know that something so natural and easy can be done to counteract that.  Any junk foods we eat add to that silent inflammation inside of us, and a lot of healthy foods are inflammatory as well. So I ordered a bottle of cherry concentrate  and read some reviews on it too. It seems to really work, as amazing as it sounds (lots of people treat pain due to arthritis  with cherry concentrate). This is the one I got: Tart Is Smart Tart Cherry Concentrate, 32-Ounce Bottle, in case you’re interested. NOTE: I am not taking it during pregnancy, just in case, so I bought it for my husband. I would research about the effect of cherry extract/juice/concentrate in pregnancy before taking it.
  • Another thing I’d like to mention is Isabella Oliver is having a 50% off sale. I wish I had more than a month left in my pregnancy because I’d love to get a few more of those dresses and skirts. But for those of you out there pregnant and looking for a super classy and elegant maternity brand, check it out: 50% off Isabella Oliver
  • A fellow “recently preggo, now with a baby” blogger Megan is holding her first child related giveaway. And she’d love for those interested to enter check it out!
I think that’s it for today! If I am not back before Christmas,  I wish you all the best time ever, whether it’s quite or crazy!
Love,
E

28 Weeks Bump Update – 3rd Trimester

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in BUMP UPDATES, My Pregnancy

I am officially in my 3rd (!!!!) trimester!

I’m starting to run out of short shorts and tight pants that fit me well for these photos, but I really don’t want to resort to normal clothes, because that won’t show the change in my body as well, which is the whole point of documenting the bump each week.

The bump update pictures are also going to move a bit. I’m not sure where but I need to change backgrounds – maybe nursery!

STATS:

Her size:  Two and a quarter pounds – keep growing little girl!

How far along: 28 WEEKS

Total weight gain: 158lb (that’s +3 for this week for a total of 21 lbs). Not sure what’s going on here and why I suddenly gained 3 pounds this week. I did concentrate on eating more protein, however my calorie intake has been the same, so hoping it’s all baby girl weight and not the Elena’s fat ass weight :)

Sleep: Iffy. The key is to go to bed earlier- then I get much better sleep.
I know my body hates me because here’s what happens in my “going to bed routine”: I go pee, then go back to the bedroom to put some belly oil on. By the time we’re done ( hubby helps moisturize me), I have to pee again, so I go and, of course, sit my oily butt down on the toilet seat  :) haha Sometimes I don’t wipe off the oil, because I find it funny when hubby goes to the bathroom in the middle of the night and slides all over the place and swears up and down. Then I finally snuggle in with my sleeping pillows and try to go to bed. The second I get into a comfortable position, I realize that  I kind of want to go pee again. I’m not sure if it’s in my head or if it’s Alexis pressing on my bladder while I’m fidgeting around trying to get comfy, but it works like a charm every time. So I go pee a third time in what must have been no longer than 20 minutes and then finally fall asleep peacefully.

Otherwise I get up 3-4 times a night to pee and drink some water AND I’ve been having the weird vivid pregnancy dreams everyone has been talking about.

So far here’s what my virtual self has been up to in my dreams:

1.) while travelling in Iran, I’ve been taken hostage by Betsy Johnson’s  (I know WTH? note: She’s a famous designer)  swat team that flew in scary looking military planes;
2.) I have been chased by a huge big foot/monster looking creature that comes out exactly at 4 pm in a beautiful mansion where I was hanging out with some of my guyfriends AND Vincent Chase from Entourage
3.) Gave birth to Alexis ( which was absolutely breathtaking) and was taking care of her (but of course always screwing up and forgetting to feed her or leaving her somewhere for hours on end), but she was still my gorgeous happy princess and I was surprised to see that she was able to smile and laugh as a 1 day old and then learned to pull up in her crib as a 3 day old :). This dream left me longing for Alexis to be here NOW!!!

Are these not the weirdest dreams ever or what?

Maternity Clothes: Yeeees. Mostly lots of loungewear. But there’re also a few brands and items I am REALLY digging right now. Finally I am starting to feel beautiful as a preggo, and finding the right maternity brands has contributed greatly to it. Check out my weekly maternity brands feature. I have many more to show you for the next 2 months.

Food cravings : We’ve discovered the MOST AMAZING chickless chicken patties ( lol). They are made out of wheat protein and normally, even though I don’t eat meat,  I am all like “Ew! wheat protein, tofu, soy protein- not me! If you want the taste of meat, eat meat), but these things are tasty as all get out. It’s Dr Praeger’s Brand, one patty has 13g of protein which is awesome, and they truly taste like chicken ( well at least to me considering I am not a fan of chicken or any meat for that matter)

Food aversions: none

Symptoms I HAVE:

Heartburn – Mild to strong depending on my diet
Braxton Hicks –  occasional

I’ve been pretty asymptomatic this week- feeling relatively good and just trying to get everything done. That everything is 13 different To-Do lists on my Wunderlist app.

Doctor’s Appointment: November 17th for the final (?) ultrasound to check placenta, baby growth, amniotic fluid and other good stuff. I’m really looking forward to it because I don’t like the idea of my belly measuring 2 weeks behind ( even though,  yeah I understand- I was a small baby myself, I am tall, i.e. lotsa room, my ab muscles are strong, fundal height isn’t a a reliable indication of growth bla bla bla- still I want to make sure she’s growing well).

Speaking of ab muscles, aren’t they supposed to soften or weaken at some point in pregnancy? When’s that point? Mine are still rock hard when I flex them.

Movement: She’s continuing her pattern of crazy movement for 2 days and barely anything another. She loves responding to daddy’s voice and is always super active when I am doing my relaxation exercises.

Belly Button: An innie with a Napoleon complex.

Gender: GIRL!

Best moment of the week: Uuuummm…wow I don’t even remember what happened this week… I guess my 1st baby dream about Alexis which made me love her a 1000 times more.

What I’m looking forward to:

Getting shit done. It feels like I’m never going to dig out from under the mound of things I have to do and research. At this point I barely even do any work ( actual work), it’s mostly like this:  cook, eat, exercise, cook, eat, answer emails, cook eat, train for birth, cook, eat, get some super important work things done, cook, eat, work on the blog, brush teeth, pass out.

What I miss:

SUSHI!

Look forward to 2nd Trimester recap soon!

25 WEEK BUMP UPDATE

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in BUMP UPDATES, My Pregnancy

You can always tell if I am having a good day or not, based on my weekly bump photos lol
How do you like my Dr Seuss socks?

STATS:

Baby size: A size of a rutabaga (huh?) and growing… In the next few weeks the brain development will explode and in just 3 weeks 90% of babies born at that point survive without any lasting health problems- always a good thing.

How far along: 25 weeks ( Is it me or are these weeks going by SO SLOOOOWLY?)

Total weight gain: Nada. I’m still at 152 lbs, still eating really well and hitting my calorie goal, but I guess considering that Little Alexis has been very active this week, not much growth was happening. Let’s catch up next week, little girl! {update: this morning I got my 1lbs for the week so I am at 153lb now)

Sleep: Good, good good! It’s good all around. I wake up 3 times a night to go pee, but it hasn’t been bothering me in the least. The 5 pillows are difficult to manage and by the time I get back into bed after my bathroom breaks, my husband is always hogging at least 3 of them, which means I have to wrestle them out of his death grip in the middle of the night.  I keep telling him that if he still hears me fidgeting, I am not done arranging the pillows- so back off. But since it takes me a few minutes to get comfortable, by then he’s already on the other side of the bed sleeping. So I have to drag his arms to me, so that we could snuggle. It’s really quite hilarious.

Maternity Clothes: Dresses when I go out, and maternity bras at home. Otherwise, I wear a lot of stretchy pants around the house. I am really looking forward to getting some nice maternity pjs to wear around the house and all my “stretchy pants'” are getting too tight.

Food cravings : Fruit, always fruit.

Food aversions: None

Symptoms:

Heartburn – I’ve been lucky to not have any heartburn this whole week until today.
Rash – Less itchy but man, it’s all over my boobs.

I have really felt great this past week. Energy is decent, symptoms are almost non-existent. So far this pregnancy I have not had any back pain, no real round ligament pain to speak of, leg cramps, constipation or any of the other nuisances that usually pop up as your belly grows.

Exercise: Ok, I’ve been bad. Busy and bad. I completely ignored my evening walks and my pregnancy exercises and my kegels this week. It makes me feel super guilty. In my defense, it’s been really busy, but I gotta really learn to manage and fit it all in: work, blogging, photography, nursery set up, online shopping, research, friends, exercise, cooking. Thank God, cleaning is the one thing that’s off our hands now.

Movement:

Alexis keeps bouncing on my cervix and it freaks me out sometimes ( wrong door, girl!). I don’t want her to even think there’s a way out yet – settle down, girl! Oh and I have not felt hiccups yet, or maybe I can’t recognize them.

Belly Button: An innie with a Napoleon complex.

I thought you might like to see the front of my belly when the light is right and shows some definition. In even lighting my belly looks almost non-existent in the front view, but if I position myself right where the light falls from the side, it looks HUGE! I just had to photograph it in this lighting.

Gender: GIRL!

What I’m looking forward to:
Doing a Nursery update. I know I’ve been promising it for a month now, but it’s moving soooo slow. Every weekend we do a little bit, and since I can’t help with painting or refinishing, my hubby has to do it all. Well, he’s taking his time, forgetting to pick up paint, not getting enough of it, blah blah blah. We’ll still have it ready in time, but I wish I could just do it all myself. So hopefully after this weekend, I’ll have something to show you. We assembled the crib, the walls are painted, the closet  and molding should be painted by then. Not much progress to report, but at least you’ll see the direction we’re going in.

What I miss:
Being/feeling productive.
I get a lot done, but I feel like this pregnancy fatigue and all the care I put into food preparation and making sure I take care of myself ( rest, interact with Alexis when she’s awake, read to her, floss and brush after every meal, moisturize twice a day, plus the constant bathroom runs, agh!) derail and distract me so much. These are all important things and I do them because I believe in the benefit, but I’d like to spend more time doing work stuff, and blogging, and catching up on everything I’m behind on. I guess I realize it won’t improve, it will only get busier. The cooking will continue because of breastfeeding ( oh I loved those days when it didn’t matter what I put inside of my body lol), time with Alexis will multiply as she grows ( and I love that idea), but at least I won’t be as tired because I will no longer be growing a human being, and I won’t need to be so diligent in my skin care routine to prevent stretchmarks, or take care of my gums like crazy because I am pregnant and most importantly, I will be able to push myself even when I am tired, which I don’t do now, because that would mean taking the precious energy away from Alexis who needs it to grow her big beautiful brain and develop the rest of her organs (wow, is that a massive sentence or what?).  So whenever I feel tired or overwhelmed, I relax, which is not something I would allow myself to do normally.

I like structure and right now I lack that structure.

Oh and I am not even close to being half way done with the nursery but I am already mapping out in my head the playroom we’re going to create for Alexis. We have this room downstairs that is just a placeholder for furniture ( literally). I cannot wait to create a whole play area out of it, with reading spots and easels and kids tables and chairs for activities and all kinds of stuff. Yeeek!!!

24 Week Bump Update

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in BUMP UPDATES

STATS:

Baby size: Corn. She’s rapidly gaining weight, lung tissue and brain cells.

How far along: 24 weeks. VIABILITY! YAY!

Both hubby and I are happy to be finally hitting the viability milestone. It seems like the weeks have slowed down again, dragging along. But it’s great to think that if something unfortunate were to happen, Alexis would have a chance of survival. I don’t even want to think about it, but I do, because I know things happen. I’ve seen them happen.

On a happier note….

Total weight gain: 1 pound (152lb) this week. After gaining 2 pounds a week for the last two weeks and then seeing a strange 1.5 lbs come out of nowhere, I decided to see where my food intake was at ( I had stopped inputting all my food for a bit). And instantly I saw the problem. I was going off of my 1st trimester mentality, where regardless of how much I ate, I still needed to eat more to meet my calorie goal. So now that I am in my 2nd trimester, and food isn’t so gross to me,I get the necessary amount of calories by eating normally. However in my mind, I still think that I hadn’t had enough and want make sure I get in one last nutritious meal before bed like I did in the first trimester ( does that make sense?). And that’s exactly where that extra pound a week was coming from. I don’t want to continue gaining double each week , thank you very much, I am very happy with my 1 pound that is necessary and recommended- it’s not good for Alexis and it’s not going to be good for me.  So now that I know what’s happening, I am back in the “1 lb a week” game

Sleep: Strangely, it’s been good. I’m loving my pillows. I still get up 3-4 times a night, but I learned to keep my mind blank while I go to the bathroom, otherwise a flurry of thoughts wake me up. Alexis has been kicking a lot during the night, which isn’t normal for her. I attribute it to the fact that I am more active during the day than I was before and the night is now the only time when she gets to be awake.

Maternity Clothes: Yoga pants, maternity jeans, maternity tops. I have found a few maternity companies I really like and I am loving their clothes.

Food cravings : Anything fresh- fruit, vegetables, salads

Food aversions: None

Symptoms:

Heartburn – It’s been much better. I am still not taking anything for it, but I’ve found tomatoes give me heartburn so I’ve been more careful with them.
Rash – It’s less itchy, more manageable. I really think it’s because of the detergent.
Fatigue – I swear there are days/weeks when Alexis must be growing a lot, because I’d be EXHAUSTED for no real reason and she’s pretty quiet. And then a few days later I am fine and she’s all active and kicking.

Exercise: I have been doing pregnancy ab exercises to strengthen my core, kegels and certain hip stretchers daily. We also go walking every day. So I’ve been feeling really good about it.

Movement:

She has one very active day, one quieter day. She totally kicks “on command” now. All I have to do is put my hands on my belly and start talking to her, or have Andrew talk to her. She loves when daddy talks :)
This afternoon I was laying on my side and she literally LIFTED UP my belly off the couch by pushing off of it with her body. That was the freakiest feeling EVER!
Oh and her favorite pastime is, obviously, bouncing on my bladder. How fun!

Belly Button: Still  an innie but it’s totally itching to come out. If I sit in a certain position, I can almost say it becomes an outie.

Gender: GIRL!

What I’m looking forward to:
My glucose test ( is that weird?)

What I miss:
Having good hair :( I HATE my hair right now. It’s  weak and stringy and just yuck. And I can’t even highlight it until I give birth. Back before pregnancy, it would get bleached in the sun when I’d be going to the beach constantly. But that’s not happening now, so I am stuck with grubby hair.

And hey, you guys, would you do me a favor?

14 weeks

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in BUMP UPDATES, Daily, EVERYTHING ELSE, My Pregnancy

Now according to ALL sources, I’m in my 2nd trimester and I can definitely feel it.

Ok, where is my BUMP, though? Seriously? I’ve been wider than normal for weeks. If you compare my pictures to those before pregnancy or at 5 weeks, I’m definitely showing, but I don’t have a bump. When I put clothes on, I look like a normal non-pregnant woman. Those who know me, would probably think that I packed on a few pounds and don’t have abs of steel anymore haha.
I guess I am glad I’m not showing yet, because that means I can still sleep on my stomach, and wear semi-normal clothes. But this week I did have to resort to my last pair of non-stretchy jeans that used to be super baggy on me and I could take off without unbuttoning and wore shorts that had to be tied with a rubber band ( what an awesome invention!). So that’s my progress in the bump area.
Thankfully, I still have quite a few stretchy jeans ( though most of them are from my NYC days, which means they’re a size 0 and 1- YIKES!- I definitely cannot fit into those even in my non-pregnant good-looking state)

STATS:

How far along: 14 weeks.

How big is baby: It’s a LEMON.

Total weight gain: I can definitely say I’ve gained at least 2 pounds ( I am at 138lb right now), which is great. I’ve been gaining a pound a week since week 12.

Sleep: Going to bed earlier has been important for good sleep. I wake up much earlier than I’m used to, but  also go to bed by 9-10pm, which is very early for a non-pregnant me.

Best moment of the week:
Being able to handle food and help out with cooking. My nausea is ALMOST gone, with occasional bad days. And this week I felt good enough to even get some cooking done.
Putting make up on –  I don’t dig walking around looking like death.
Getting a cleaning – I somehow love those, because it makes me feel fresh and new. Plus I was glad to see that I’m doing relatively good with my gums, which is often a problem in pregnancy.

Food cravings: Nada. I can eat sweets again, though. So I have a small cookie or two a day to satisfy the need for something fun. Otherwise, I’m loving plums, peaches, anything fresh.

Food aversions: I can ALMOST think of fish again. And I had some walnuts this week ( wasn’t happy about it, but didn’t throw them up either).

Symptoms:
Nausea – Getting better and better. I have days where I feel so blah from low grade nausea and others when I almost don’t feel it if I don’t think about it.
Heartburn – still there, but not as bad this week. Not sure what I am doing differently.
Skin – Last week it almost got better and this week I am back with all kinds of stuff popping back up. Ugh!
Leukorrhea – oh what fun pregnancy is lol {I thought my water leaked or I peed my pants haha}

Gender: At our 20 week ultrasound in September

What I’m looking forward to: having a permanent housekeeper so that I didn’t have to feel so guilty about not wanting to do any housework. I was always under the impression that it’s super expensive to have one, since it costs 250 bucks to have people come and clean our house (4000 sq feet). However, after doing some research I realized that you can hire a local lady for $10/hour to come in daily or every other day. It’s totally worth it for us right now and I am super duper excited about having a clean house again.

 What I miss:
Nothing right at the moment. The nausea is getting better and just that little is making me love life again (LOL).

Next appt: August 5th
