I’ve been meaning to catch myself up on photo posts for a while now and I think I am pretty close. My goal being, to be able to post current happenings in photos right after they take place rather than wait till I get through the backlog of photos. This is sort of a photodump. As much as I try not to do it, it is sometimes necessary. Next up: my first solo fun outing with girlfriends (which really happened in August, oops) and of course THE REST OF THE DISNEY POSTS (I promise they are coming)

1. Birthday Beaching

These photos got lost in the mess that my TAOMAB folder is at this point. But Lexi is so cute in some of them I couldn’t leave them off the blog. This was the morning after AJ’s birthday. It was stormy and overcast, so we had only a short swim but the beach was gorgeous in its frowny state.

New Life

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in Daily

Do you ever have this feeling…
…where you walk outside and witness an amazingly calm moment…

It had just rained and it’s like the water from the rain renewed everything and everyone and made it shiny, new and fresh.

I was in the middle of cooking tonight and had about 5 minutes to spare. I walked out onto our front porch and paused. I didn’t know it had rained. It might have been a calm warm Florida summer rain that goes by in 10 minutes, only leaving a trace on the shiny pavement, cooling the air, making birds sing like they’ve witnessed the beginning of life. It was dusk: still light enough to see every single bit, but dark enough for the streetlights to turn on. The air smelled unreal…unreally good…unreally fresh. The humidity of Florida and the cooling of the air produced this out-of-this world quality in the surrounding air, flowers, palm trees, bushes and streets.

I wanted to bottle this feeling, this atmosphere, this moment. Oh how I wish I could take a picture or film a video of the street, but I know from expierience that something like that cannot be transfered on film. It’ll lose its magic, it will be too dark, or not dark enough, the colors will be all wrong- so I left the camera in the house and just enjoyed it.

Not many things stop me in my tracks, but this moment did. It made me think about how beautiful life is. It made me sad, but in a good way, that way you get after a refreshing rain.  The birds obviously agreed, because the melodies sung were sad and gentle at the same time. My husband walked out and just hugged me at my waist and we stood there marvelling at the beauty of nature, the beauty of Florida.

We are so lucky we get to enjoy it every day, right here from our front porch, or on our colorful hammocks overlooking the golf course on the back patio.

I would never be able to live in the city! I love greenery, I love piece and quiet, I love moments like this where you can just appreciate nature. I am a suburbia girl, that’s a fact.

I lived in New York for a time, and while that life can be amazing, and exciting and alluring, I think it was only that way because I was a model, with all the doors open to me and people doing everything for me. I can never imagine actually living there as a family.

In my mind, I say it again and again and again: “I love where I live”. And that’s such a big thing, don’t you think?

Oh and can you guys please vote for me below. The numbers are reset and I would appreciate being in the top few pages. Thanks, loves!

Lazy Beach Days

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in Daily, FUN Times, Msc, photo

I find days like these  the most magical.

We’re always in a rush, always working, never seem to have time to just relax and go somewhere. Plans to meet up with friends or go to the beach are always viewed as an inconvenience or obligation until we actually get there….ahhhh. And then we remember what life is about.

It’s so easy to get lost in the “work work work” mode, or the “baby” mode, or whatever currently occupies you. So hard to step back for a second and remember why we are here. And that is to enjoy life to the fullest. For some people that might mean food, or alcohol or smoking or fast cars. For me, it’s the easy laid back days at the beach like yesterday.

When people find out we’re vegan/vegetarian and we don’t eat most processed foods, they  say “You only live once! Enjoy it! Stop being so strict with food. Live a little!”

But for me THAT IS LIFE! I love being healthy and feeling healthy and I want to continue enjoying beach days like this well into the old age. I want to look good and feel good forever. That is why taking care of my body, being mindful of what I eat, how much  exercise  is not a chore for me. It honestly brings me joy. Joy that I am doing the absolute best for my health.

How did this post turn into a health post? I’m not sure, but what I do know is that moments like yesterday is what really makes me feel alive. And photography prolongs those feelings because I get to bask in those moments for a few more days while I edit the photos, and then a few more when I share them with you, guys. And then when I’m old and wrinkly, I will look at my young hot self and for a second remember what it felt like.

Weekend Boat Trip

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in FUN Times, Msc, photo

This past weekend we went out on to the beaches and canals for a little boating trip with our friends. The weather was glorious and despite my attempt to cover myself in spf, I got burned and didn’t even notice until I got home ( damn wind that masks sunshine).

{All the photos were taken with a really shitty camera that I brought just to take pictures in the water since it’s waterproof and my iPhone. The funny thing the iPhone pictures were much better quality than the point and shoot. The only reason these are still acceptable at this point is because I edited the crap out of them. Anything can look good with proper editing.}

We drove the boat to a resturants mainly accessibly by boat. I barely found a vegetarian meal there. Out of a HUGE selection there was 1 (!!!) vegetarian option ( come on!): portobello sandwich. It was even more difficult for Andrew- there was NOTHING vegan, so we finally found some beans and veggies on the “sides” menu. Haha!

Every Sunday a ton of boaters gather by this one beach around Keewayden Island. The current is so insane there, that you can easily float out into the Gulf of Mexico.

And finally, I am walking on sunshine… Oooohhhh-oooh!

EVERGLADES TRIP

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in Msc, photo

A few weeks ago my husband and I were invited to go to a seafood festival in Everglades City, a little fishing village in the middle of nowhere in the Florida Everglades.
We arrived at our friend’s house half an hour late ( as usual ) with all the guys ( his friends) waiting for us ( oops). I was the only female in the group. My girlfriends were going to arrive a little later by car, while we took a leisurely 4 hour  sail by boat.
Hubby was, of course, the last one out. He has this amazing ability to always be the late, regardless of how early he starts gettting ready and if there’s a group of girls waiting for him who took 2 hours to do their make up and hair. He’s still the one we always wait for.

We finally took off. The boat was rented by J., who I knew through a mutual friend, who happens to be my NYC best friend’s dad and lives in Naples ( small world, right?). I know it’s super complicated, but isn’t it fun how you meet people via the most random ways possible. It was docked at his amazingly gorgeous 8000 square foot house ( you’d faint if you heard the price ). As we were started sailing I couldn’t help it but took a picture of it.

The way to the gulf through the canals took only 5 minutes, but I have to say the beauty of that place always blows my mind regardless of how many time I’ve seen it. I keep trying to remind myself that I am still in the continental United States and not somewhere in the tropical waters of the Caribbean and that it’s (OMG!) where I live.

This little island right before the opening into the Gulf of Mexico is my favorite little secluded beach. The sand is so soft and it always has a layer of super hot watery sand that you can roll around in and pretend you’re getting a mud bath.

Of course, they let me steer the yacht. Ok, no, who am I kidding, it’d totally freak me out. That thing was huge. This was the interior cabin and for some reason it had some of the controls here, though the capital was upstairs in the main area where he does his “capitain-y” things. { sorry I know nothing about boating, so my vocabulary there is very limited}

After about 3 hours we finally reached the Ten Thousand Islands, an area of Everglades that is covered with little canals among mangrove trees that make up literally 10 thousand islands.

Everyone is the group was about 20-30 years older than us, since they were all buddies of my friend’s dad, but that never really bothered us, since in our business we mostly deal with people twice our age and usually find more common ground with them than some of the couples in their twenties.

The Everglades City area is really a trashy place, in my opinion, very rednecky, God’n'Guns type of town, but it was fun to visit for a day just to see all the odd people gathered for the festival.

Thankfully, one of the guys was the owner of a local resort so we spent most of our time at the clubhouse, by the pool and at restaurants.

The resort itself was really beautiful. It had this old Key West type of feel with a lot of white and tropical colors. It was a heaven for a photographer. I posted the photos of the resort on my photography blog, Selfie Magic, so go over to check them out. They will warm you up if you’re still dealing with cold temperatures.

As soon as we arrived the first thing the guys did is raid the bar, and I ran all over the place snapping pictures. I think I heard a few of them laughing at me “Does she ever stop taking pictures?”. They all loved the pictures though. They kept asking me if I’d post them on Facebook haha.
I really couldn’t stop taking pictures. The sun was in the right place for all the shots throughout the day and i just kept snapping. By the way, all the shots were taken with my 50mm lens, in manual. I love that thing and refuse to use anything else.

Eventually, we took a golf cart into town to look at what this whole Seafood festival was about. There were a ton of very bizarre people, lots of local arts and crafts.

A small fair with people actually riding those awful looking things. I never understood why one would want to go on a ride in a local fair. Seems lame and, honestly, unsafe.

When we finally found the food, I refused to eat anything since it was buffet style but most people were happily enjoying local fish. I would have loved to try it if I didn’t see all the workers handling the food out in the open with no gloves and such. Yikes! I know I might be a snob when it comes to food, but I’d rather not indulge my taste buds, than  spend the night puking due to food poisoning.

When we were ready to go home, we realize someone took our golf cart, so we walked about 2-3 miles back to the resort, which was a nice small work out for the day.

When we arrived back, the other part of our group was still gone, so I took the time to do some self portraits in the beautiful settings of the resort.

Then the guys came back and demanded to be in the picture :)

We spent a few more minutes taking self portraits with hubby.

and as the sun was setting, we got ready to finally eat in a normal place with clean food :)

My two girlfriends finally arrived and took some pressure off of me being the only girl in the group. Trust me it’s tough when the attention of super roudy 50 year olds is on you.

Scavenger Hunt Sunday

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in FUN Times, photo

Yes, it’s Sunday again and I cannot believe it! Seriously weeks fly and I seem to get nothing done.
As usual, I promise myself to be more productive and not waste time this week. I’ve been feeling like crap honestly. Not sure why- probably the cold- but I’ve been slacking on my pilates, or cleaning or even working half-heartedly.

So here’s my Scavenger Hunt items for today and let’s hope for a better week ahead.

1. WINTER

It’s sort of hard to portray winter when you live in South Florida. Here are a few pointers to distinguish Florida’s winter from Florida’s summer.
Summer: always clouds in the sky, afternoon thunderstorms, green lush grass, temperatures in the high 80s
Winter: cloudless sky ALL THE TIME, No rain WHATSOEVER, grass has this greenish-yellowish tint and grows really slow, temperatures in high 70s ( except for the last two stinking cold years)

2. SELECTIVE COLORING

I’m not a fan of selective coloring. To me it speaks of amateur photographer ( no offense to anyone), but sometimes selective coloring can be done tastefully. As long as it doesn’t stand out, and feels like it’s natural (-ish) coloring, I’m fine with it ( like Ashley’s shot here). This shot is of the flag on the golf course that we live on: Valencia.

3. FRAMED

One of my favorite things about photography ( besides DOF) is framing. I love finding cool ways to photograph things. Sometimes it takes thinking out of the box which doesn’t always happen especially if you’re shooting on the go.
SOOC.

4. WIND

That was easy. The day the scavenger hunt was announced, it was super windy. I mean like, hammocks flying everywhere, tree branches falling. Score!

And finally

5. REMEMBER WHEN…

This was my favorite theme this week. I love flashbacks. I have over 45000 photographs from the last 8-10 years ( literally) and I love sharing.
This was taken in the summer of 2002 when I first met my future husband. Look how young and cute we both are. We were so happy and in love ( and we still are, but a different kind of love, the kind that lasts). My best friend Elena (on the right) is now in Italy, happily married to a great Italian guy Max and we are here in US, ready to have our first baby :) It’s funny how life moves and changes.

Last week in photos

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in Daily, photo

I meant to post this last week :) LOL
I really can’t believe it’s Friday again. Weeks seem to be flying by. Maybe it’s because I’m working a lot… Or maybe not enough.
So here I was on a Friday night driving to Kohls to get some household stuff. Oh, the life of a supermodel!!! I’m just kidding. I can’t even categorize my life at this point. It’s on the cusp of something amazing… But just not there yet.

I have so much to write about. Seriously, I’ve never had so much inspiration. I attribute it to the new format of blogging. Here. On my own.

I have over 15 drafts with posts I thought would be cool to write. So expect the unexpected and en masse.

But for now, my week in photos:

Weekly couples masks. My favorite. Cosmetics line is Origins. Because it’s natural and because it makes my skin feel the way no other cream does. So when we got a sample charcoal mask I was sold – clears your pores like no other! I finally dragged my hubby to the Origins store at Dillard and let the sales lady work her charm on him. We walked away with $300 worth of creams but from that moment on, my DH has been diligently putting his creams on and it’s been showing. His skin is smooth and glowy and super-puper young.

Jakey crashed out in my arms. I’m the kind of person that if a cat fell asleep on me, I won’t move until said cats wakes up. So I sat at my kitchen table for like 40 minutes :)

Sunsets in our bedroom. Hanging out by the Christmas tree

Beautiful Florida days. It was cold but gorgeous. The photos were taken with my iPhone camera, so excuse the quality. I had edited them a bit to reduce the noise and the “amateur” quality of a phone cam. This place is amazing. It’s a Garden of Courage and Hope built by a man whose wife died from cancer after a long long battle. This garden is located directly across from the hospital where his wife spent her time fighting cancer and is a wonderful getaway for all people, sick and visiting.

Florida Weather and Blog Guidebook

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in Daily, photo, Pre-CONCEPTION

Yup! That’s pretty much what i am here to talk about: the weather and a new cool blog directory I found.

While sifting through different blog sites I found a link to  The Blog Guidebook, so now i have another resource to get new readers and find new fun blogs. I recommend, peeps!

Now, on another really nasty unpleasant sucky note, I.am.really.honestly.freezing. to.death
Seriously people? What is it with Florida weather? Last year it was insanely cold for a month. This year it started in early December. Two years ago, we were still swimming in the pool with my girls.
I don’t mean to be complaining but the only reason I moved to South Florida is to escape any kind of chilly weather ( and palm trees… and ocean…). I kept gradually moving more south every couple years ( from Russia to Ohio, from Ohio to Jacksonville, Florida and then finally to South Florida because North Florida was just still too cold for me). And that’s what I get? Do I really need to move to Key West at this point? And then what? Puerto Rico? { actually my hubby grew up in Puerto Rico- his dad was a translator for the government}

The temperatures have been in the low 60s during the day and low 40s at night  ( that’s where it really gets me). We kept the heater off thinking it’s a one day deal and it’ll warm up because our heaters here in Florida suck and it would take longer to just get it going and then we get a $100 bill for running it for 1 day ( seriously!).
So needless to say that I am very grumpy today! We had to go out to do some tests at the hospital and i literally had to layer 2 sweaters ( one christmasy sweater) and was still cold. Brrrrr.

Oh and good news ( for me): my chicken pox titer came back and I have immunity, so i do not have to get a shot before pregnancy YAY!

Self Portrait

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in Daily, photo

I used to be a huge self portrait “artist”. Each day/week I’d come up with another fun idea for a self-portrait. Hell, my whole flickr account is one massive self portrait ( I promise I am not in love with myself, i just find it much easier to bring ideas to life when i don’t have to make anyone pose for me. And photographing inanimate objects…. eh! not my cup of tea).

Now that being said, I have to disappoint everyone with a pretty lame SP. BUT… I have an excuse. And a good one.
My spoiled by warmth body cannot handle the horrible temperatures of globalwarming Florida. It has been in the low 60s! 60s!!!!
That is good 20 degrees below my comfort zone. Northerners! No snickering!
So to illustrate what I have been doing this whole week, I am posting this picture.
I have been FREEZING, SLEEPING, WEARING THERMAL PJS, FUZZY STRIPED SOCKIES ( don’t you love them? ) and hugging my husband to death ( for warmth. No other reason).
Even my favorite Travis ( one of the black kitties) kept crawling under the blanket every night with me and tucking his wet cold nose in my arm ( that part I do love).

So here we go. That is me every morning  for the past week.

Impromptu Shoot at the House

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in Daily, FUN Times, photo

I used to be a crazy photographer. I have 45,000 pictures from the last 2-3 years and don’t even have a baby to photograph. This year I’ve slowed down with my picture-taking, so when I woke up after Thanksgiving ready to shoot something, it was an urge I could resist, to my husband’s chagrin.

We got ready to go get some Black Friday shopping done, happened to put on matching outfits, and after a quick look in the mirror , I knew who my next photography victim was going to be. Since i stopped maniacally taking pictures, we haven’t taken any fun/good family photos in the past year. So I dragged A. around the house  like a mad woman armed with a tripod, a nifty-fifty and a Mark II. The result was a bit better than expected.

Here are some of them:
