Christmas Mood

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in Daily, PHOTO

Our holiday plans include doing absolutely nothing on Christmas ( or going to Key west or maybe going to Mickey’s Xmas party. Can’t decide which). Spending New Years with friends at an All White Party in Miami. Going to Universal Studios to experience the Harry Potter ride and drink some Butterbear again. Then visiting friends (internet friends for the first time! That’s always my favorite part of the internet friendships)  mid January in Colorado and hopefully doing some skiing)
So it’s going to be busy!

Our first real wonderfully smelling Christmas Tree. Enjoy the Lights

Self Portrait

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in Daily, PHOTO

I used to be a huge self portrait “artist”. Each day/week I’d come up with another fun idea for a self-portrait. Hell, my whole flickr account is one massive self portrait ( I promise I am not in love with myself, i just find it much easier to bring ideas to life when i don’t have to make anyone pose for me. And photographing inanimate objects…. eh! not my cup of tea).

Now that being said, I have to disappoint everyone with a pretty lame SP. BUT… I have an excuse. And a good one.
My spoiled by warmth body cannot handle the horrible temperatures of globalwarming Florida. It has been in the low 60s! 60s!!!!
That is good 20 degrees below my comfort zone. Northerners! No snickering!
So to illustrate what I have been doing this whole week, I am posting this picture.
I have been FREEZING, SLEEPING, WEARING THERMAL PJS, FUZZY STRIPED SOCKIES ( don’t you love them? ) and hugging my husband to death ( for warmth. No other reason).
Even my favorite Travis ( one of the black kitties) kept crawling under the blanket every night with me and tucking his wet cold nose in my arm ( that part I do love).

So here we go. That is me every morning  for the past week.

Scavenger Hunt Sunday

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in Daily, PHOTO

This is my first time participating in Scavenger Hunt Sunday. To be honest, I barely had time to snap those pictures. I used to participate in countless photo projects on Flickr, like FGR, but life seems to keep adding things for me to do and to want to do ( and now planning a baby- agh!) I cannot imagine what I will do when we have a child to take care of. Maybe I’ll stop working when the kiddo comes and try to tackle all the other things. Most people wonder how I find time to do all the things I do and the answer is probably simple: I don’t let myself be lazy. I might skip doing the dishes over photographing, or won’t fold the laundry in favor of writing a blog post, but I am always doing something.

So moving onto to the Scavenger Hunt. The topics were:
1. In My Home
2. It’s beginning to look a lot like…
3. Sweet treat
4. Time

We have a very big house and there are quite a few rooms I enjoy spending my time in,  like our movie theater room, our home office that gets THE MOST light and smells like pine because we set our Christmas tree up there. But my absolute favorite room is the guest bedroom. We designed that room and did the work on it ourselves ( tile, paint…). I absolutely adore how light and summery it feels there with peach paint and weightless white curtains. We call it our “Florida” room.

Christmas can be difficult for a couple like us, with no kids and families and friends spread all over the world. So the last two years we didn’t even decorate- we’d just go somewhere for Christmas. However, this year I insisted on buying a real live Christmas tree and dusting off our ornament boxes. It has been so festive around here I can’t believe we missed out on this fun for the last 2 years. Since we have 4 cats and live trees can be very toxic to cats, we decided to set it up in our upstairs office, so that cats would only be there under supervision and all the other times we’d close the door. Sucks a bit, but what are you gonna do? I’m not willing to risk my babies’ health.

I’m not obsessed with sweets. I like them, I crave them, but I am in no way a sugar hog. I won’t take ANY desert. It has to be something I really like. I suppose I feel that way because I’m highly educated in nutrition and foods, so if I do decide to have something as high in all things bad as most sweets are, I make sure that it’s truly something I love. And it happens very much subconsciously  i never have to think about it. Some people think i have willpower, I think it stems from realizing EXACTLY WHAT i put in my mouth.
So that being said, one of my favorite treats is a version of S’mores, foreign cookies that have a marshmallow center surrounded by 2 soft cookie like sheets and covered in milk chocolate. Believe me, homemade S’more aren’t as good as these suckers ( especially if done with something as nasty as Hershey’s chocolate) {seriously, anyone who thinks Hershey’s chocolate is good has never really tried the good stuff ( Swiss choco anyone? mmm)}. These little babies are only 100 calories a piece and I only have them after a meal with tea. Lovely! BTW, if you grew up outside of U.S., do you remember Wagon Wheel sandwich cookies? These are exactly like that but smaller.

 4. TIME

I spent the whole day trying to find a single clock in our house that is worth photographing. It turns out we have none. The one silver clock that is hung on the wall in the office doesn’t work. Considering we work solely on computers and I’m inseparable with my iPhone, there hasn’t been any need for clocks around the house. So here’s what I wake up to every morning- Sleep Cycle alarm, the most wonderful app out there that tracks your sleep movements and wakes you up ONLY when you’re in the  light stage of your sleep. The app saved my life. I used to wake up at noon and still feel like I needed to sleep, now I get up around 6 or 7 am  and I am always so refreshed!

Everyday, I have the pleasure to see some of the most amazing sunsets through our bedroom windows. The golden sunset light LOVES to play on the bedroom walls, and furniture giving it this beautiful autumn feel. That’s my favorite time of the day to relax on my porch in an orange swing with a nice book in hand ( currently I am reading a few books: a book by Ellen DeGeneres, a book about models, and a few pre pregnancy and pregnancy books) and absolutely no worries.

Gravatar – Making Blogging Personal

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in Daily, PHOTO

You know that greyed out or default avatar picture that shows up every time you post a comment? ( I wish the defaults were as cool as these little buggers down here, but you get the idea)

Well, you can customize it to have YOUR picture show up on all the blogs you comment on ( including yours if needed)

Gravatar is this cool service that allows you to associate an image/button/avatar with your email address.
Here’s how it works.
1. Create an account at
2. Add an email address that you usually use when commenting on other blogs
3. Add a picture and associate it with that email address.

From now on, every time you comment anywhere with avatar capabilities ( mostly blogs), as long as you type in that email address, the photo you associated with it will show up.

It’s pretty cool actually. I can’t stand anonymous avatars. This makes it so much better.

So, my blogless readers ( you know who you are), take the time to do it, so that I could see your pretty faces displayed above your comment.

Impromptu Shoot at the House

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in Daily, FUN TIMES, PHOTO

I used to be a crazy photographer. I have 45,000 pictures from the last 2-3 years and don’t even have a baby to photograph. This year I’ve slowed down with my picture-taking, so when I woke up after Thanksgiving ready to shoot something, it was an urge I could resist, to my husband’s chagrin.

We got ready to go get some Black Friday shopping done, happened to put on matching outfits, and after a quick look in the mirror , I knew who my next photography victim was going to be. Since i stopped maniacally taking pictures, we haven’t taken any fun/good family photos in the past year. So I dragged A. around the house  like a mad woman armed with a tripod, a nifty-fifty and a Mark II. The result was a bit better than expected.

Here are some of them:

Thanksgiving and Black Friday Shopping

Written by Elena @The Art of Making a Baby. Posted in Daily

Believe it or not, but I’m pretty much done with my black friday shopping.  All done online. I have one more store to actually go to and that’s it.
Compared to last year’s BF, when we went shopping at midnight and stayed up till 6 am shopping with our friends visiting from Italy, this is a cop out.

Two deals I’d like to bring your attention to that I took advantage of:
