About us

This is Me!

I am the ultimate summer girl. Cold, snow, wind, rain- those I things I refused to accept and that is how we ended up one of the most sunny touristy towns in the Sunshine State. I have too many hobbies to list or have time for, which causes a lot of frustration (many desires+no time= frustration). At this point my long time hobbies are photography, video editing, drums, blogging, foreign languages and reading. Though with Alexis’ arrival I ONLY have time to concentrate on one: blogging. I spent some time working as a model in New York and Miami and quit because it was time to start a family. My personal goals, for self-improvement, would have to be getting really good at playing drums and perfecting my Spanish and moving onto French. I love anything and everything tropical, colorful and warm. Right now I am knee deep in raising a little baby named Alexis who, along with my husband, is the light of my life. I’m looking forward to sharing amazing adventures with her as she gets older and hope to still be blogging to record them here.

This is Hubs!

This is my husband, Andrew (AJ, Shmimkin, hubby and DH, among others). He spent the first 9 years of his life living in Puerto Rico with his family and was the only blond little boy on the block. Then his family moved back to Ohio, which he hated ever since. When I came along, I “saved” him from the cold and the boredom of the Midwest and convinced him to move to Florida. Sometimes he indulges me and sings karaoke at home and plays piano while I play drums. He’s really good at what he does for a living and is the NICEST guy I know. He is the best second half I could have ever hoped for. He takes care of me, treats me like a little princess, brings me breakfast and kisses in bed when I wake up. We do absolutely everything together: work, play, travel.

This is Lexi!

She’s an adorable, albeit high needs, 16 months old ( at the time of writing). We like to say that she was born looking around ( and we have a video to prove it that is too rated R to show here), because her most favorite activity is and has been looking at things. For the first few months of her life, the one comment she consistently got from nurses, doctors, friends and family is how incredibly alert she is. And alert she was, sleeping about half the amount of what’s normal for her age. And while we hope the sleeping situation improves eventually, we love our fun smart incredibly aware girl who doesn’t like to act her age and loves attention more than anything. She started “speaking” to us at 2.5 weeks and smiled at 2 weeks, laughed out loud at 2.5 months and those are the most important milestones for us, as her mom and dad. She loves songs, chewing on things, playing in the water, being carried around, and when I “eat” her toes and cheeks and nose. There’s not much more to say since she’s so little, without going into details that noone else but us cares about. She’s just a very special girl (but again, I’m incredibly biased)!

OUR CATS:

Our 3 little kitties, Travis, Casper and Jake. Two black brothers and the king of the cat household. They’re the sweetest cats ever with their own personalities and each brings something to the dynamic of our household. Since Lexi came along, they’ve been a bit neglected, but C’est la vie. We still love them a lot.
Jake is the fluffiest one and we have Jackey fur balls in every corner of the house. He loves his belly rubbed and has the fluffiest tail you’ve seen which he loves to twist around our legs while he’s begging for treats.
Travis is a sleek black panther who thinks nothing of jumping on our chests and curling up in our arms, giving us kitty kisses and mews like crazy when we get out of the shower because we’ve been gone too long and now need to give him lovies.
Casper is our little emotional gay boy ( or at least we think he would be if he wasn’t snipped). He’s super vocal and kind of heavy and cannot stand when someone else is getting attention. He has a foot fetish and prefers licking your toes to any other activity.

ABOUT US:

We have been together for 9 years now. We’ve been married for 8 years and we’re just as in love now as we were before, but it’s a different better kind of love. We spend every waking hour together. We love to go rollerblading and do pilates as our work outs, we both eat extremely healthy (correction: ate when we had time to cook, and hope to get back there once Alexis isn’t as much of a handful). We moved around quite a bit until we found the perfect town to live in till we die.

In 2010 we decided that it was time to start preparing for a baby and after about 6 months to a year of intense preparations, we conceived the first month of TTCing in May of 2011. You can read how we found out here. We had our beautiful and healthy baby girl, on January 31, 2012. Here’s how we found out the sex of our baby. THE ART OF MAKING A BABY

I started this blog as a way to journal all the steps we were taking to prepare for conception and pregnancy. Eventually it grew into so much more, almost an extension of my life. If you are planning on becoming pregnant or are pregnant you might find a few posts useful, so make sure to check out Pregnancy and TTC resources on the top navigation bar.

What I blog about: Two years ago, I wrote a lot about my preparations for pregnancy, pregnancy itself and my feelings and thoughts about it. Now that Alexis is here, it’s mostly about her and our daily life and events, as well as challenges and joys of parenthood, baby products, health and fitness, a little bit of fashion (I really kind of suck at picking out clothes), and a lot of learning and reflecting and experiencing life the way new parents do, through trial and error.

I also have a photography blog with a slant towards self-portraiture with tutorials. Feel free to visit Selfie Magic. I have stopped blogging there for the time being, but I really hope to start again in the future when Alexis is older and we can do photo projects together.

    E…

Thanks for swinging by my blog! I love yours…just wanted to make sure you get my response…I wrote an article about Pregnancy and Weight gain that you might want to check out. :)

“Thank you!!! :) I’ve been working hard at it (and I’ve been lucky not experiencing morning sickness, etc…so working out has still been manageable!). So far, I’ve gained ~22 lbs…depending on the day and the meals I ate the day before, of course!

I also just wrote an article that you should check out – http://tapmommies.healthtap.com/pregnancy-and-weight-gain-%E2%80%93-part-1/

    Hope that helps! :)”

Hi Elena, I just found your blog through top baby blogs. I love reading your story…it is so similar to my husband and I. We also spend every waking hour together, and have been together for nine years (married for almost 5 of those years). We had known we wanted children at some point, but were so happy with our lives that we kept waiting. Finally in Oct. of 2009 we started trying (we also wanted an August or a July baby). Little did we know it would take us ALMOST EXACTLY a YEAR to conceive! (We also REALLY wanted a girl and did the Shettles method and Chinese gender chart.) It worked for us too! We got the girl we’d been dreaming of!
Congratulations to you!!! I had my baby girl in May 2011, just as you were starting your journey!! I look forward to following your blog and seeing how things progress for you.

You said Andrews family is in Ohio and that you went to a Kent halloween party? Does Andrews family still live there.
I don’t live too far from Kent that’s why I asked. I knew a lot of people that went to college there too.

I look forward to the post when you are willing to post such a long story. Those are always fun to hear about.

He grew up in Mentor but at this point only his dad is still there. He lived in Akron at some point and went to Kent state and Akron U. His best friend lives in Akron that’s how we ended up at kent parties

Oh yes…. The Kent parties. I always heard about them but never went. I wasn’t much of a party girl. I was always afraid of getting in trouble. You can trust yourself and be good. But, you can not trust other people. Especially college boys! :-)

I don’t blame you guys for living in Florida. If it weren’t for family here I would have moved already. I love my family but can not move away from them. Especially when I have kids. I can only imagine how hard it is to have you mom so far away. I have heard you talk about that. But, I do see that you talk to her all the time so that is just awesome! Gotta love the momma!

A doesn’t have a big or close family, and his sisters left Ohio as soon as they turned 18 ( smart girls), so we really didn’t have much family holding us there. I do wish my mom could be here… and theoretically she could, but she thinks it’s too late for her to make such a big move :( We do talk daily on skype which helps.

TOOO LATE? It’s never too late. Will this be her first grandchild? If it is….. I’m sure it will only be time before she moves here!

Great website! I love your post on organic. We also spent the extra cash on an organic mattress ($400), but I think it is worth it. Plus, Ben sleeps about 13 hours a night on average, so he must be comfortable! I spent less on the crib, and splurged on the mattress.

    Good luck with baby!

Hi Elena! Love your blog and reading about your pregnancy! I have kind of a photo-related question for you. What kind of camera do you use? I’m new to the photography thing and am looking to buy a DSLR. Wondering if you have any advice for a newbie? :)

Hi, Evee! I shoot with canon 5d mark II, but I gotta tell you- the quality of your photos have more to do with lenses and your skill than the camera itself. My favorite lenses are canon 50mm 1.8 and Tamron 28-75mm 2.8.
And then good post processing makes even a bigger difference, so knowing how to use Lightroom or Photoshop is crucial.
You can visit my photo blog (www.prebabyblog.com)- there are more tips there on photography.

You would not believe .. even before I read that you’re from Russia, and that your name is Elena, I was at 90% confident that you are Russian girl.))
Maybe because I myself have lived for over 20 years in the former Soviet Union ..
Our girls can be seen from far away ..!!!
Sorry for my english, I try to pull up.
